We often get asked to provide recommendations on family friendly accommodation in Melbourne. It’s a good question and the answer really starts by defining “family friendly”. In our experience it is a concept that is open to interpretation and expectations can differ dramatically. We’ve done our fair share of travel with our own little man and we know there are a few key ingredients to make accommodation truly family friendly. It is important for hotels and apartments that pitch themselves as family friendly to make available as much of the gear that comes with travelling with kids as possible. This means:
And if there is in-house dining, then a kids menu is a must have. Those accommodation providers that go above and beyond also provide toys and other forms of entertainment for travellers of all ages.
If you are looking for a place to stay that is likely to be of the ‘above and beyond variety’, then you’d be wise to check out sites like Stayz and AirBnB who offer a range of “home stay” style options.
Some places listed on these sites even come with play equipment – for in and outdoors – which is ideal for travelling families. But don’t discount some of the big names who – you may be surprised to discover – are very family friendly. Like the Novotel, who we put as top of the pops when it comes to kid-friendly. Check out their Family & Novotel promise, including their fabulous play areas.
Two other great resources that we recommend are Family Friendly Accommodation and Hotel Club, which can help narrow down the search when it comes to finding family friendly options. For families leaving this great city of ours and heading to Sydney or abroad, then check out the fabulous Kid & Coe website for family friendly accommodation solutions – and it’s super easy to use too.
