Why is Melbourne the world’s most liveable city?

You know to sit up and take notice of a destination when it’s receiving rave reviews, and especially multiple times over. I’m not talking about an award here or there for a nice beach or a nice restaurant, I’m talking the big guns – the award all cities long to receive – the world’s most liveable city title. Well, I’m pleased to tell you that Melbourne has yet again, for the FIFTH (yes fifth!) year running, won the title of the World’s Most Liveable City, awarded by UK publication The Economist (Economist Intelligence Unit to be precise). It came top out of 140 cities and is the first city to have won it five times in a row. This is no namby-pamby magazine, this is a publication with serious clout, so you know that when it speaks, it speaks the truth.

So why is Melbourne the world’s most liveable city? Well, the prestigious title was judged against many factors, including healthcare, social infrastructure, public transport, climate, cultural amenities, international connectivity, crime, and political and economic stability – all factors which are important in choosing a place as a new home. Of course, everywhere has its downsides, and Melbourne is certainly not perfect – nowhere on earth is. Cities are expensive places, and whilst Melbourne isn’t the most expensive city on earth, it’s not the cheapest either.

When compared to other cities which appeared on the list, such as the nearby South East Asian cities, and those further way in North America, Melbourne certainly excelled, coming up tops in categories relating to climate, sports, food and drink, things to see and do, and simply how friendly it feels when you step foot in the city. Sunshine certainly doesn’t hurt, and having a range of activities at your fingertips, both immediately inside the city, and a little outside too, certainly means that a life in Melbourne is varied, never dull, and extremely interesting. Given we take tours to these destinations day in and day out, we’d have to agree that Melbourne and surrounds has so much to offer everyone.

In terms of culture, there are around 100 art galleries as well as plenty of theatre and musicals on offer too. Melbourne is a UNESCO City of Literature and plays host to more than 3,000 live music performances every week. Melbourne International Comedy Festival is a terrific time to visit as it can claim to be amongst the world’s top three comedy festivals (with Montreal and Edinburgh). In 2014 it hosted 6,488 performances by 2,228 artists.

Let’s look at food and drink. There are more than 2000 cafes and 3000 restaurants in the city able to seat a combined 178,320 at any one time. Heston Blumental recently relocated his Fat Duck restaurant here, complete with its staff. The Melbourne Food and Wine festival has more than 200 events in just over two weeks. Victoria has over 850 wineries and 650 cellar door experiences.

In and around the city you can visit important historical sites, as well as places boasting stunning natural wonders, like Phillip Island, The Great Ocean RoadMornington Peninsula, the Yarra Valley, Daylesford and Macedon Ranges. Did you know that although Victoria has only 3% of Australia’s landmass, it’s home to 30% of the country’s native animals and there are 139 mammal species in this state alone?

And we haven’t even touched on sport! This will need to be a topic for another day. But here’s a little teaser. In terms of sporting heritage Melbourne is the birthplace of Test and One-day International cricket and is the only city in the world with five international standard sporting facilities on the fringe of the CBD. There are heaps more if you go a few kms further out, too.

Put simply, Melbourne is a vibrant, bright, and colourful city, packed with attractions and a great place to enjoy life in wonderful surroundings. A fantastic city, proven by so many visitors, new residents, and of course recognised by world-renowned journals and publications.
